CustomDomain™ docs

Glossary

The words the CustomDomain™ console uses, one name per thing, each with a plain definition and where to read more.

The console uses one name for each thing. This page lists them, in plain words, with the page that explains each one. A ? beside a word in the console shows the same line and links here or to the page named.

Workspace

Your team's space on CustomDomain™: its people, billing, applications and domains. The API calls it a tenant. See The console at a glance.

Application

One product or environment in your workspace, such as Production or Staging. Each has its own widget, API keys and domains. See Applications.

Domain

A web address you or your customers connect, such as shop.acme.com. The API calls each one a connection (/v1/connections). See Connections.

Routing

Where an application's domains send visitors: through our edge to your site, or straight to your own servers. The console page is Routing, titled Where domains point. See Where domains point.

Edge serving

We answer a domain's visitors over HTTPS and pass each request on to your application's address (its origin). It is one of the two routes, on the Growth plan. See Serve customer domains from your app.

DNS hosting

We run a domain's DNS for its owner, so its records stay right with nothing to type. The owner changes one setting where they bought the domain, its nameservers. In the console it is the DNS hosting card on a domain's DNS tab and the DNS hosting setting of an application, which offers it to your users. The API calls it managed DNS and nameserver migration. See Managed DNS and the nameserver migration guide.

Nameservers

One setting where a domain was bought (at its registrar) that says who runs its DNS. DNS hosting changes only this. The console shows nameservers under Technical details. See what nameservers are.

DNS host

The company that runs a domain's DNS records. Often not the one the domain was bought from. See DNS providers.

Connected accounts

DNS provider and registrar logins and keys we keep, encrypted, so we can set up and repair many domains for you. When you connect one you choose its Access (Continuous keeps it until you remove it; One time uses it now and deletes it) and Which domains it may change (all of them, or only the ones you choose). The API calls them provider accounts. See Provider accounts.

Managed

A domain is managed when we keep a lasting sign-in or key for it and put its records back if someone changes them. See Managed connections.

Ways to connect

The six ways a domain's records get added, by the names the console and these docs use:

NameWhat happens
Sign in with your providerApprove access once at the DNS provider, in a popup, and we add the records.
One-click setupThe provider shows the exact change and you approve it there (Domain Connect).
Secure sign-inYou sign in to the provider in a secure window we run, approve the exact changes, and we add the records.
API keyYou make a key at the DNS provider and paste it once, so we can write the records.
Add the recordsYou copy a few rows into your DNS provider's panel yourself, and we check them.
DNS hostingThe owner points the domain's nameservers at us once, and we host every record.

Sign in with the provider

The console names the button for the provider: Sign in with Cloudflare, for example. See Choose how to add the records.

One-click setup

The provider's own page shows the change and you approve it. See Choose how to add the records.

Secure sign-in

See Secure sign-in.

API key

A provider's key, not a CustomDomain™ API key. See Provider setup.

Add the records

See Bring your own records.

Root domain

The domain with nothing in front, like acme.com. Some DNS providers point it with an ALIAS or ANAME record instead of a CNAME. See Root domains.

CAA record

A DNS record that says who may issue certificates for the domain. One that leaves out Let's Encrypt blocks HTTPS. See Certificates at the root.

Certificate

What lets browsers open the domain over HTTPS. We issue it and renew it for you. See Certificates.

Monitoring

We re-check live domains and tell you when their records change. See Monitoring and services.

Remove a domain

We stop serving it and, where we still have access, take our records back out. See Removing a domain.
